Conduct and protocol at FKCFA
Fisheries management is an extremely complex issue with many moving parts. As a board, FKCFA can only attempt to address all of the issues that concern commercial fishing famlies. For the most part, FKCFA focuses on the most pressing fisheries management issues which make the strongest economic and social impacts.
In order for FKCFA to be effective, the board prioritizes issues in order of importance. Issues become important based on the amount of feedback the board gets from you, the commercial fishing community. Right now we have several short-term and long term issues that need to be dealt with. Some of our short-term issues include: improving the representation on the FKCFA board, membership growth, dockside visits, website, and the Docksider newsletter. Some of our long-term goals include: protecting working waterfront, greater PR for the industry, affordable housing, minimizing impacts of proposed regulations and strengthening the industry, and creating a Best Fishing Practices video.
Board meetings are essential for FKCFA, without them we are not “on the same page!” The FKCFA board meets monthly and can meet for emergency issues. A typical board meeting will last for approximately 3 hours . Many of our directors have the opportunity to report on their dealings with the federal and state fisheries management bodies. Elections occur in June of each calendar year. All board meetings are open to the general membership so if you want to address the board just let one of us know so we can tell you when the next meeting will be.
The only way FKCFA can continue to build a strong relationship with the commercial fishing community is through honesty, transparency and trust. If we are to work effectively in defending this industry, we must seek new ways to engage our fishing community. In the near future, FKCFA has committed to holding regional membership meetings to update our community on the latest fisheries related issues.
Our mission at FKCFA is to “take the high road.” In short, that means we set aside our personal interests and agendas to do what is best for the industry as a whole. We trust that the commercial fishing industry will reach out to FKCFA to take care of pressing issues; no matter how controversial they may seem. Transparency and communication will unite the commercial fishing community in our quest for industry preservation and harmony.
